Volunteer.

You must be a member in order to volunteer.

All we have done, are doing, and will accomplish is not possible without the commitment, time, and skills of our volunteers. As a non-profit organization, volunteers are the lifeblood of the organization.  Since we took possession of our ship and 28 sailors returned her to our shores and our homeport of Evansville, hundreds of volunteers have worked thousands of hours in restoration, maintenance, and sharing the ship’s historic legacy to tourists and school groups while in port and during our annual cruise. There are always volunteer opportunities for our members! Volunteering is a great way to learn new skills, make new friends, and take part in a once-in-a-lifetime experience aboard a historic vessel.  Our experienced crew is happy to help train new volunteers in areas of interest as opportunities arise.  New volunteers will be assigned to one of the following Departments based on their interests and skill sets:

The Deck Department oversees navigation and locking & docking while the ship is underway, standing watches in the Wheelhouse and taking care of all necessary line and anchor handling.  Deck Department members also undertake restoration and maintenance projects throughout the ship, cargo and crane operations, and radio work.

The Engineering Department is always on the lookout for volunteers with experience in and/or a love for mechanical and electrical engineering, working with diesel engines and generators, metal working, and plumbing/pipe fitting.  While underway, the Engineering Department stands watches in the Engine Room, operates the ballast system as necessary, and handle other tasks when required.

Those who work in the Galley are some of the most appreciated members of the crew.  Their tireless work preparing meals ensure our crew remains well fed and happy.

During the approximately 11 months that the LST-325 is docked at her home port in Evansville, IN we are always looking for Tour Guides to help educate visitors on the importance and history of LSTs!

Finally, if you are unsure of which Department would be a good fit, or feel you may be lacking in experience, fret not!  The Memorial is always eager to train new volunteers in one or more fields.  Simply sign up as an “Apprentice” on the volunteer application.  The Memorial will reach out to you as opportunities to volunteer and train become available.

Come join our staff and volunteer crews who strive every day to preserve the USS LST 325 and the crews of all LSTS’s legendary naval legacy.  We ask that all our volunteers become members of the USS LST Ship Memorial.
